| The Archdeacon of Newark - The Venerable Nigel Peyton Reaching from the A1 in Newark, west to the Ashfields, Mansfield and the M1, as far north as Bawtry and south beyond the cathedral town of Southwell, the Archdeaconry has considerable variety. Nigel is responsible for 180 churches, their clergy and people, in urban and rural parishes, former coalfield communities and the market towns of Retford and Worksop. “My task is to encourage the people of God in mission and service, to help good things happen and enable change. This involves bringing the right people, resources and ideas to bear upon a myriad of challenges and possibilities at the right moment.” Following training at Edinburgh Theological College, Nigel was ordained in 1976 in the Scottish Episcopal Church, spending his early ministry years in Dundee. He joined our diocese in 1985 as an inner city vicar in Nottingham, subsequently becoming Ministry Development Adviser. He has been a member of the Church of England’s General Synod since 1995 and is a Non-Executive Director of Ecclesiastical Insurance plc. Nigel has degrees in history and in theology from Edinburgh University and Union Theological Seminary, New York, and is currently completing a doctoral research project on contemporary Church of England priesthood at Lancaster University. Nigel is married to Anne who is a teacher and they have two grown up children and a granddaughter. His recreations include walking, gardening (his compost heap!), real ale and the Hebridean island of Islay.
