Bishop revs up for latest challenge

The Bishop of Sherwood will be looking to Lewis Hamilton for tips this week as he tries out the hot seat ready for a new sporting fixture in September, when he will head up a team in the first Inter-Church Kart Challenge.

The Bishop, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, will be leading a team of fearless drivers against teams from churches across the diocese, who will come together for a special Kart race with over 100 drivers at the PF International Circuit south of Newark.

Organisers are currently seeking participants from local churches for the event on Saturday 29th September at 5pm when 25 teams of drivers from across the diocese will take the green light in a two hour endurance Karting race.

Photo Opportunity: The Bishop of Sherwood will be testing his  driving  techniques and picking up some tips from curate and racing driver, Simon Butler, in his Formula Ford racing car, shortly before the next meeting of the Diocesan Synod at 7pm on Wednesday, 20th June 2007 at Building B7 on the Nottingham University Park Campus.  He will be encouraging other church members to put forward teams for the event.

The competitive kart race has been organised to encourage sports-minded Christians from across the diocese to get together. One of the brains behind the event, the Revd Simon Butler, who drives racing cars in his spare time, said: “Everyone should be aware this event is not for the faint-hearted!  We’ll be using 70mph Pro-Karts on the UK’s top international spec outdoor kart circuit.”

The event will run from 4-9pm on 29th September 2007 at PFI Circuit, Marston, just off the A1 south of Newark. The cost will be £250 per team of up to 5 drivers.

Starting at 4pm, when drivers will sign-in, the event will begin with a 30 minute practice session at 4.30pm, with the race itself kicking-off at 5pm. Supporters are welcome to view the race in the grandstand seating for guests, family, and friends. The race will be followed by food at a fixed cost of £5 per head and after the supper there will be a short service of worship.
