New representative for women priests

Inner city priest and theologian, the Revd Ruth Worsley is to be the new Dean of Women’s Ministry for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham.

Ruth Worsley (44), will take over from the Revd Canon Janet Henderson, who leaves the diocese next year to take up her new appointment as Archdeacon of Richmond in Yorkshire.

Alongside her parish role, Ruth will advise the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham on the concerns of ordained women in the Church of England locally and as a member of the Bishop’s leadership team she will be a representative for women priests and issues affecting their ministry.

The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy said: “I am delighted to announce that Ruth Worsley has accepted my invitation to become the new Dean of Women’s Ministry and to join my staff team. Besides her significant theological qualities Ruth has multi tasked in ordained ministry in an inner urban setting handling regeneration projects, a church re-ordering project and ministry among asylum seekers. Her leadership skills have already been demonstrated by her election to serve the National Church through membership of General Synod and by her appointment to CMEAC (Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns).”

Ruth Worsley, Priest-in-Charge of Hyson Green & Forest Fields St Stephen with St Paul, was appointed as Area Dean of Nottingham North in 2006 and also represents the clergy of the diocese on the Church of England’s General Synod. Before training for ordination, she studied theology and English at Manchester University and then began training as a nurse. After working in her local parish and assisting with pastoral and youth work, Ruth went on to take an MA in Mission and Ministry at St John’s Theological College in Nottingham. She took on the first role as chaplain to students spouses at the college and then began training for ordination into the Church of England in 1996. She began work as a curate at St Stephen’s Hyson Green and was appointed as Priest-in-Charge at the parish in 2001.

Ruth is married to Howard, who is the Diocesan Director of Education for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham. They have three children – Nathanael, Jonathan and Ben. Ruth is a keen walker and enjoys other outdoor pursuits with her family. She is good at singing, canoes and plays the saxaphone very loudly.
