Bishop’s new fund to help youth exchanges between Notts and South Africa
A new fund to enable exchanges between young people from Nottinghamshire and South Africa has been launched by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy.
The new Youth Exchange Fund is the focus of the Bishop’s Lent Appeal for 2008, and the fund will also receive support from money given at confirmation services during the year.
Young people from both countries will be able to apply for funding to support exchange visits, which will build on the links between the two dioceses. The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham said: “Living with people in different cultures and in different situations is always transformational and I hope this new fund will enable young people to have fresh experiences and build new relationships that will have life changing effects for both them and those they meet.”
A special link was formed between the Diocese of Natal in South Africa and the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham in 2003 and since then groups from the UK have made short visits out to Natal and groups have also been welcomed in Nottinghamshire. An inter-school link between Nottingham Bluecoat School and St Nicholas Diocesan School in Pietermaritzburg enabled students from Nottingham to visit Natal last summer and a group of students from Pietermaritzburg will be welcomed to Nottingham next month.
The link between the two diocese has been strengthened further this week as the Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, has been appointed to chair the new Link Group for the diocese. Bishop Tony recently led a diocesan party on a visit to Natal and is enthusiastic about ways to take the link forward. Priest-in-Charge of Kimberley and Nuthall, the Revd Barbara Holbrook will be the new link officer for the diocese, taking over from the Revd Canon Graham Pigott. Barbara was one of those who helped to set up the original Link before leaving to serve her curacy in Derby Diocese. She will be supported in this role by Shelagh Baird-Smith, the World Development Adviser for the Diocese.
